Introduction

Anúncios

Neva is an emotional action-platforming adventure developed by Nomada Studio, the creators of the acclaimed GRIS. Released in 2024, the game follows Alba, a young warrior who forms a deep bond with a wolf named Neva while traveling through a world slowly being consumed by a mysterious corruption.

Rather than relying on long conversations or conventional exposition, Neva tells much of its story through animation, environments, music, character behavior, and the evolving relationship between its two protagonists.

The result is an experience that places emotion and visual storytelling at the center while introducing more action and platforming than Nomada Studio’s previous game.

The journey is divided across four seasons, and Neva’s growth is an important part of the adventure. What begins with Alba protecting a vulnerable wolf cub gradually develops into a partnership in which both characters become increasingly capable of helping each other.

Story and Setting

The game opens with Alba and Neva facing a devastating event that changes the course of their lives. From there, the pair travels through landscapes affected by a dark force that threatens the natural world around them.

The changing seasons provide more than a visual backdrop. They help establish the progression of the story and reflect the relationship between Alba and Neva as the wolf grows. The contrast between colorful natural environments and areas overtaken by corruption gives the world a distinctive visual identity.

Neva deliberately keeps its dialogue to a minimum. Instead, small details such as Alba calling for Neva, their physical interactions, and their reactions to danger communicate the bond between them. This makes the relationship feel like a central gameplay element rather than something that exists only in cutscenes.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Neva combines side-scrolling platforming, environmental challenges, exploration, and combat. Alba has a sword and can perform attacks, jumps, double jumps, and evasive movements as she progresses through the world.

The platforming is generally approachable, but the game introduces new mechanics as the adventure develops. Different sections require players to understand the environment, time their movements, and make use of abilities acquired throughout the journey.

Neva also changes as the wolf grows. Early in the game, Neva is a young companion who needs Alba’s protection and encouragement. Later, she becomes increasingly independent and gains abilities that allow her to participate more directly in exploration and combat.

This progression gives the adventure a satisfying sense of development. The player does not simply unlock abilities for the sake of adding mechanics; Neva’s growth is connected to the story and changes how the two characters interact with their surroundings.

Combat

Combat is one of the major differences between Neva and GRIS. Alba can confront the creatures affected by the corruption using her sword, while movement and dodging are important during encounters.

The battles are not designed as an extremely punishing action system. Instead, combat complements the platforming and narrative rather than taking over the entire experience. Some encounters can still become tense, particularly when enemies appear alongside environmental hazards or more demanding movement sections.

As Neva becomes stronger, the relationship between exploration and combat evolves as well. Her abilities give Alba new possibilities and reinforce the idea that the two characters are gradually learning to survive together.

Visuals and Sound

Visually, Neva is one of the game’s strongest elements. Its hand-crafted, painterly aesthetic uses expressive animation and carefully composed environments to create scenes that often feel more like illustrations brought to life than conventional game levels.

The use of color is particularly effective. Natural landscapes can appear warm and vibrant, while corrupted areas introduce darker imagery and an unsettling atmosphere. This visual contrast helps communicate the state of the world without requiring lengthy explanations.

The soundtrack also plays an important role in establishing the mood. Music and environmental sounds work together with the animation to strengthen emotional moments and give different sections of the journey their own atmosphere.

Progression and Replayability

Neva is a relatively short adventure, with the main journey generally taking only a few hours depending on the player’s pace. This is worth considering for players who expect a long action-platformer with extensive progression systems.

However, the shorter length also allows the game to maintain a focused structure. Its mechanics, visual design, story, and music are built around the same central relationship instead of stretching the experience with unnecessary content.

Players who enjoy discovering optional elements and revisiting sections may find additional reasons to explore the environments, but Neva is primarily designed as a compact narrative adventure rather than a game built around endless replayability.

Final Thoughts

Neva successfully combines platforming, combat, environmental puzzles, visual storytelling, and an emotional relationship between its protagonists. Its strongest feature is the way Alba and Neva’s evolving partnership is reflected in both the narrative and gameplay.

While players looking for a long or mechanically demanding adventure may find its campaign brief, Neva offers a focused experience with memorable art direction, expressive animation, atmospheric music, and a story that can leave a lasting impression.

For fans of atmospheric indie games, narrative platformers, and visually distinctive adventures, Neva is an experience worth considering.
